"Almost!" Now
there's a word we usually assign to defeat and loss. During this year's
Olympic games, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Darra Torres, the
41-year-old mother who "almost" won the gold medal in the
Women's 50 meter freestyle. In fact, she lost by only (.01) one
one-hundredth of a second, the smallest possible margin by which one can
lose. But "almost" is not just a word assigned to defeat, but it can describe the jubilation of victory! In this same Olympic games, Michael Phelps won the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly by (.01) one one-hundredth of a second, the smallest possible margin by which one can win. You see, "Almost" or "What could have been?" cuts both ways. It can be one of the saddest words one will ever hear, but it can also convey relief and victory. While many will no doubt stand before God and regret "almost" becoming a disciple of Jesus, others will find reason to rejoice when they realize how they "almost" allowed lesser things to distract them from discipleship. What about you? Do you appreciate the word "almost?" Do you realize how fortunate you are if you are a disciple of Jesus? Were it not for godly parents, where would you be today? Or, were it not for a neighbor or friend who loved you, where would you be today? How many of us were almost lost? Were it not for the prayers, expressions of love, and acts of divine providence, where would we be today? Do you realize how fortunate you are to be saved when you were "almost" lost? Give it some thought, and go your way rejoicing for you were almost lost, but you have been redeemed! | ||
